Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and respected jazz artists to have emerged in our generation.
With a career spanning more than 30 years, it’s hard to imagine there are many “firsts” for a musician as prolific as Redman. And yet, his latest project (where are we) is his first for the venerable Blue Note Records label and finds Redman writing lyrics and recording with a vocalist for the first time. That vocalist is the dynamic Gabrielle Cavassa, winner of the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition.
Through the lens of geographic location, Redman and his band march across the United States, asking us to take a critical examination of what we find. where are we is a meditation on the power and importance of place – and includes arrangements of Bruce Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia, Woody Guthrie’s After Minneapolis, Rodgers & Hart’s Manhattan, and John Coltrane’s Alabama.
